Black Shuck part two is out today in Prog 1892.  Written by us, with pencils and inks by Steve Yeowell, colours by Chris Blythe, and letters by Simon Bowland.

BLACK SHUCK // PART TWO
Scandinavia, 813 AD. A Viking raid on the settlement of Dunwich in East Anglia led to the warrior known as  BLACK SHUCK being captured. But he was washed up at the court of King Ivar the lone survivor – what terrible calamity befell the others during the sea crossing? Now Shuck has been dragged into the war between Ivar’s people and the monstrous Jötnar…

I am come to spill Troll blood!

I read online that some people felt that the first part of Black Shuck got off to a bit of slow start (something we’ve been accused – and indeed, in some instances, guilty – of in the past), in which case I trust this second part has demonstrated adequately that we’re not messing about here. Black Shuck is monster-punching carnage and, trust me, it’s only going to get crazier form here on in.

Page One synopsis notes:

Black Shuck fearlessly joins the Vikings’ battling the Jotnar. The fight is an epic and bloody one.

Yes, that’s it.

“Black Battle”

(6 pages)

 Page One

This is a four panel page with three tiers; the middle tier is much shallower than the top and bottom – more of a slice. There is one on the top, one the middle, and two the bottom. EXTERIOR, NIGHT throughout.

Panel One

Here we are on the battlefield outside the walls of Ivar’s kingdom. The Viking warriors are over now, engaged in combat with the mighty Jötnar. Here we have a shot showing a huge Jötunn swinging a gigantic club made from a tree trunk and smashing/scattering several armoured Vikings in its path.  This is just a glimpse of the epic battle that’s going on so, if there’s room, please feel free to add in more trolls and Vikings fighting. There are four Norse font captions.

Cap: King Ivar’s men had fought the Jötnar many times before.

Cap: With each attack upon the Northman’s territory, their numbers and ferocity grew.

Cap: Beneath the stars they battled, night after night – man against monster.

 Cap: Warrior against savage.

Panel Two

This panel is a slice across the middle of the page. It shows Black Shuck’s dark eyes, his black brows frowning. There are two Norse captions.

Cap: Then came he who was neither.

Cap: Then came he who was both.

Panel Three

This panel shows the head of a Jötunn being separated from its neck by the swing of a mighty sword. The Troll looks pretty surprised. There are two captions.

 Cap: Angle Barbarian.

Cap: Bastard son of the king.

Panel Four

This is a full figure shot of Black Shuck, standing holding the dripping sword in both hands and looking badass. Unlike his battlefield companions he is wearing next to no armour but does have a black fur-line cloak. His cloak, hair and beard are blowing dramatically in the wind as he frowns out at us. There is one caption, and one balloon from Shuck.

Cap: They called him Black Shuck.

Black Shuck: I am come to spill troll blood.
