Centuries before Christ lay in his manger, Mithras, Roman God of the Sun, was born a miraculous birth in lowly surroundings. His birthday corresponding, more or less, to our own 25th of December. Mithras’ story and festival were co-opted by the Christian faith, forming the basis of Jesus’ Nativity story, and now ubiquitous Christmas celebrations.
